Dr. Brigitta Stone-Johnson (Brigs)

Brigitta Stone-Johnson (Brigs). is an artist, architect, and researcher who grew up in rural KwaZulu-Natal and lives in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has lectured at the Wits School of Architecture (SoAP) since 2016, after practising full-time as an architect for 11 years. Her work treats the post-mining city of Johannesburg as a material ecology, exploring contamination of earth, air, water, and geology. considers the interactive transformations among human, animal, vegetable, mineral, and climate in forming new geological elements. Her artistic practice coalesces around material-based exploration. Working with metal, ochres, charcoal, and light-sensitive emulsions. Her work.
Her creative practice informs a feminist new materialist writing practice. It considers living matter in cities, representing a more-than-human world and bringing humans into conversation with the deep past and the deep future. It argues that design as urban material intervention can be an act of repair.
