MATERIALS, BODIES, FLOWS – 2018

“To tell a story with stone is intensely to inhabit that preposition, to move from solitary individuations to ecosystems, environments, shared agencies, and companionate properties. In the interstice between boulder and granite escarpment, between ecologist and mountain… to better know stone’s ways, mineral life emerges. This vivacity is, to use Jane Bennett’s apt word, vibrant: pulsing, radiant, thrumming with possibility. (Jeffery Cohen, Stone: An Ecology of the Inhuman.)

Materials, Bodies + Flows, Explores the lively agency of stone and organic materials, through an exploration of chemical interactions between inky mediums, ink, local ochres from the Witwatersrand ridge, food colouring, Jik, alcohols, and ochre chalks. Within the stone, plants and people are considered lively agents in constant exchange with one another within terrains. Key themes included surface, flows, terrains, stone, weed and narrative bodies.
